A novel initiative I must say. A program by PRS Legislative Research to assign a young graduate to an MP for about 10 months with a stipend. Details below;

The Legislative Assistants for Members of Parliament Programme is designed for exceptional young Indian citizens who are seeking opportunities to widen their understanding of the nature of politics and policy making in India.The programme provides invaluable exposure and serves as a launch pad for future careers in management, law, public policy, journalism.

Role:
Under the Legislative Assistants for Members of Parliament Programme, PRS Legislative Research (PRS) is seeking committed, high-motivated individuals to assist MPs for their work in Parliament.  Each Legislative Assistant (LA) would be assigned to a specific MP, catering to their individual research needs and duties.  The LA will help MPs frame questions, raise issues and prepare for their committee meetings and speeches.  The programme is based on similar exposure that youth get in assisting legislators in other democracies as the US and UK.

Qualifications:
Individuals who have recently completed their Bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Since the focus of the programme is Parliament, the LAs will need to be based in Delhi for the entire period of the programme.

Duration:
Each LA will be engaged full-time for 10 months (July 2010 – May 2011).

Compensation: Stipend of Rs 10,000/month + Rs 2,000/ month for internet, telephone and conveyance costs.

Application Process:
Send your CV along with a 500 word description of why you would like to participate in the programme to talent@prsindia.org with ‘Legislative Assistants for MPs Programme’ in the subject line. Deadline for applications is June 16, 2010.  Interviews will be conducted for shortlisted candidates in the week starting June 21, 2010. Offers will be made on June 28, 2010.  Programme commences on July 12, 2010.
